Singing bowls awaken a beautiful and
powerful mystery. They produce the
sacred sound of AUM. Their rich sonic
vibrations alter space, mind, and time.
They are used for meditation and for
following the Yoga of Sound. The sound
and music of the bowls awakens cellular
memory and permeates the aura with healing
energy
The singing bowls originated in the
pre-Buddhist, shamanic Bon Po culture of the
Himalayas - often called "Tibetan" singing
bowls, they are actually made in Bhutan, Nepal,
India, and Tibet. They are ‘resting bells’ and,
as such, part of the Bell family, which culture
seems to date back to a Bronze Age in China some
4,000 years ago, which, at its peak, extended
geographically as far as Burma and Indochina.
However, Chinese and Japanese resting bells are
made in a very different manner. Some
sources state that the bowls are made from the
seven sacred metals, corresponding to the sacred
seven planets: gold (Sun), silver (moon),
mercury (Mercury), copper (Venus), iron (Mars),
tin (Jupiter), antimony (Saturn), yet others
that a selection (of anything from 3 to 9 -
depending upon whom is being asked) from a total
of nine metals was used (the seven listed above
plus nickel and zinc) and yet another comprising
twelve metals. Legend goes on to say that the
iron was sometimes replaced by meteorite found
on Himalayan mountaintops, metal from the
heavens, or that meteorite was added also.

The Tibetan Bell represents wisdom. Its
hollow symbolizes the wisdom recognising
emptiness and the clapper represents the
sound of emptiness in all its forms. The
body of the Tibetan Bell is decorated
with a vase which represents the vase
containing the nectar of accomplishment.
Above the vase, is the face of
Prajanparamita, above which is a lotus,
a moon disc and finally a vajra.
The Tibetan bell is always played in the
left hand at heart level. It is held by
the middle of the handle and swung back
and forth. When used in meditation, a
playing stick may be used around the
rim, and the sound produced reminds of
the emptiness of all things, and the
quality of wisdom one must develop to
attain this realisation.
Made of brass,
the Tibetan Bell measures
12cm diameter and 20cm height.
This
beautiful statue is a representation of
Queen Mayadevi, chosen mother of Buddha.
The legend tells how Mayadevi gave birth
to Buddha, from her right side, whilst
travelling to her parents home. On the
way to her parents home, she passed
through a valley full of flowers and
fruits. Desiring to rest between them,
she stopped and grasped the branches of
a flowering tree. As soon as she had
done so, she felt the pains of delivery,
and standing thus with her hand to the
branch, the Buddha to be, emerged from
her right side.

Ganesha is reputed to be a remover of
obstacles he is propitiated before the
beginning of any new venture whether it
is the building of a new house, the
writing of a book, the beginning of a
journey or the starting of a new
business. His images adorn the walls of
innumerable business establishments
across India. It is customary for
businessmen to seek his blessings each
morning before they start the working
day. Ganesha is also the god of wisdom
and prudence. These qualities are
signified through his two wives: Buddhi
(wisdom) and Siddhi (prudence). Ganesha
has a thorough knowledge of the
scriptures and is a superb scribe. This
latter quality is manifest through the
fact that he is the scribe to whom Vyas
Dev (the narrator of the Hindu epic
Mahabharata) narrated his enormous epic.
Ganesha did this work so thoroughly that
the Mahabharata is one of the most
harmonious works in the Hindu
scriptures. Scholars, both mythical and
historical, explain that this is so
because, before undertaking to do the
work, Ganesha stipulated that the
dictation should never falter and that
he should, at all times, be able to
understand what was being said. Thus, it
is not strange that such a conscientious
god is propitiated by all and sundry.

The practice of Buddhism began 2,500
years ago. Only within the past century
have Western cultures reached out to
embrace Buddhist wisdom, whose essence
is to awaken and to serve. Blocking
one’s mortal path to awakened or
enlightened service are egotism, greed
and selfishness, each of which leads to
endless and needless suffering.
